Melissa Vila Tela, aka AVA, is a young Belgian artist. On the occasion of the release of her latest project Fade, we asked her a few questions. Enjoy!
What made you think: okay, let’s get into the music industry?
Music made me experienced different emotions for the first time, and since I always had difficulties to share my feelings, I started writing what I couldn’t say. I’ve always been comfortable with singing and at that time I understood that I should devote more time to it.
What are your musical influences?
I really like Jazz and Soul music, they are really spiritual kind of music, but I’m also influenced by R&B from the 90’s, as well as Hip-hop and Pop music.
Could you tell us about the story behind Fade?
Fade is the story of a painful separation that did not heal easily. I hesitated for a long time before jumping ahead, but I felt the need to write it and even if it is not easy I’m ready to go forwards.
What about your future projects?
I’ll work in collaboration soon, but at the moment, what I would like to do is live music. I’d like to share my work with people and make them enjoy.
Do you have a musical memory to share with us?
The first time I heard Amy Winehouse, her voice literally transcended me, and since Aaliyah Dana Haughton I never felt such a feeling.
When do you set yourself in Airplane Mode?
I set myself in airplane mode after a long day or a short evening, always with music of course!
If you had to define Belgium in one song, which one would it be?
“Les Bourgeois”, a song by Jacques Brel. Although it’s a song from the 60’s, as I come from Brussels I would say that nothing has changed. Belgians are bon vivants who love beers.
What is the most rewarding in your artistic activity?
I compose my songs myself and during the creation process the outcome depends on the atmosphere around me. So, it’s definitely the composition.
Why did you choose to sing in English?
I chose to sing in English because I think it is a beautiful language. By the way, it was a challenge to write in English since I don’t speak English fluently and I hope to improve my level over time. I discussed it with people around me and I decided to sing in French, stay tuned !
