Following so many disasters, famous deaths and terrorist attacks, many people have numerous reasons to despise the year 2016. Despite all these horrible events it’s safe to say that music-wise, 2016 was a year for the books. With the release of a long-awaited sophomore album from Frank Ocean, two impeccable albums from the Knowles sisters and the release of an album from the legendary rap group Tribe Called Quest.
As the year comes to an end, the music Gods have decided to gift us with great projects this last month. These are the 4 projects we are most looking forward to:
1. Childish Gambino aka Donald Glover
Notably was on hiatus for most of the year, but we are slowly seeing what he’s been working on all this time and we understand that his absence was well worth it. He held his top secret music festival, Pharos, he performed his only performance of the year, Gambino played a lot of unreleased music and it was forbidden for the festival goers to film the performance, but from the reviews, it was an outter world experience. Donald Glover then dropped the first season of his TV show “Atlanta”, a poignant, hilarious and thought provoking television show about an upcoming rapper that finds fame in the city of Atlanta. It shows how fame changes the people around you and it denounces the strange things that happen once you get into the limelight. Donald Glover took advantage of the airtime to touch on police brutality, transsexuality and racism in a humorous yet thought provoking manner. It goes without saying that Donald Glover is a talented young man. In November, Childish Gambino announced that he would also be dropping an album called “Awaken, My Love!” on the 2nd of December.
After hearing these two tracks it’s easy to say that whatever Childish Gambino has planned in the upcoming album is unlike what we have heard but it’s damn good!
The Toronto based rapper announced he’ll be releasing a playlist entitled “More Life” sometime in December, on his Beats 1 radio station “OVOsound Radio”. On the 32nd episode of OVO Sound Radio, Drake announced during his birthday episode the release of a December playlist. He treated the listeners to 4 songs that would be on the upcoming playlist:
Needless to say, Drake is going to bless us, with another classic.
3. J. Cole
After his hiatus, since he dropped and toured 2014 Forest Hill Drive, a lot of J. Cole fans have been starving to hear some more material from the rapper. Just today it was announced that J. Cole will be releasing an album entitled “4 Your Eyez Only” on the 9th of December.
4. Kid Cudi
Kid Cudi will be releasing his long awaited album “Passion, Pain & Demon Slayin'”, on the 16th of December. After having checked into rehab and gone through beef with Drake and Kanye West, it’s great to see that Kid Cudi is not folding his cards. He’s still staying strong and releasing music. A lot of Cudders are waiting impatiently for the artist’s album, that apparently won’t contain a lot of rap.
